11th May 2016 - the 4th lecture from the series "Researcher's view of the Community Led Local Development".
Prof Michael Woods - "Rural Development in a Global Countryside"
This lecture will examine the challenges and opportunities for rural development resulting from globalization, and discuss how initiatives such as LEADER can help rural communities to define their own future in an increasingly global countryside.
The lecture will outline some of the key implications and challenges for rural areas of globalization, and introduce an interpretative model developed in the DERREG (Developing Europe’s Rural Regions in the Era of Globalization) project to assess how globalization impacts on specific rural communities and how they respond.
It will then proceed to consider some of the opportunities for rural development that globalization also presents, and how grassroots action in rural communities is important for realising these.
Finally, the last part of the lecture will discuss different examples of good practice for rural development engaging with globalization from across Europe, drawn from research for the DERREG and GLOBAL-RURAL projects and the Wales Rural Observatory.
