Project title: Applied research about ecological grain farming
MEASURE: 1.7.1
Measure name: cooperation for development of new products, processes and technologies in the agriculture and food sector and the forestry sector
Theme: cooperation based on science
Keywords: cooperation, ecological producing, innovation
Start year: 2011
Name of the beneficiary: LTD Kuresoo
Backround of the project: As if 2011, the land for ecological cultivation is more than 120 00 ha. The average productivity in ecological production is quite low in Estonia and probably will stay lower than in mainstream production because of the technologies. The successful development of ecological grain cultivation can go on without supports only when they could manage to ensure the good soil quality and raise the ecological effectiveness of production. The production of ecological grain with stable quality could allow to ask higher prices for the grain and thus the profitability of production would raise.
Objectives of the project: The aim of the project is to conduct applied research about raising the effectiveness and sustainability of ecological producing, and improving the quality of ecologically grown grain.
Main activities: To fulfil the aim, different applied researches for improving the quality of cultivation technologies, green manure cultures, fertilizers and grain.

The main activities are the following:
1. testing innovative sowing techniques;
2. exploring the concurrence of cultivating intensity and papilionaceous crops for soil;
3. exploring the concurrence of cultivating intensity and papilionaceous crops for growing processes of crops and field output and its' quality;
4. testing green manure- and inter-crops and their usability during sowing;
5. evaluating the efficiency of different ecological fertilizers and bio-coal on improving soil quality;
6. exploring the usage of liquid manure;
7. exploring the impact of nutrients, growing place and cultivation method for seed quality and vitality;
8. exploring the quality of grains after processing, and analysing the nutrient concentration according to growing method;
9. exploring the factors that influence the quality of beer-barley, and growing method that is suitable for ecological agriculture;
10. using the opportunities of permaculture in large scale production;
11. creating the cooperation network for sharing information and experiences;
12. the researches and tests will be carried out on the plots of Jõgeva Plant Breeding Institute as plot experiments, and Kuresoo Ltd and farm of Jaan Tooming Väljaots as producing experiments.
13. purchasing necessary devices for project implementation.
Output and results indicators: Crop experiments are still ongoing but the carried out experiments have given the elementary information about different opportunities of cultivation. They created a producers network to actively change experiments with. They have also carried out a series of field days.

The knowledge about technologies of cultivating ecological grain of project participants has increased. The right cultivation technologies has helped to raise the productivity and to decrease the risks. The project will contribute on increasing the supply of high-quality ecological grain in Estonia which allows to export ecological grain of necessary amount and balanced quality.

The project will also aim to develop technologies that will be suitable for Estonian ecological producing. New knowledge helps to raise the crops output and quality, an will increase the offering of stable quality ecological grain.
Project has also positively impacted the entrepreneurship that started the project, but the information is shared actively with the members of Consumers Cooperative Wiru Vili. Of course the cooperation network involves wider group of entrepreneurs.
Experiences/lessons learned: There is too less useful practical data in Estonia that is necessary for large-scale ecological producing. The project will give a positive impulse in to Estonian ecological production.
