ESTONIAN RURAL NETWORK: Study-trip about local food to Austria

Place: Austria

Rural- and fisheries Network bureau of Rural Economy Research Centre organized a study-trip about local food to Austria on 24-28 October 2011, to get some experiences on Austrian local food production and related projects, and to meet with Austrian Ministry of Health.

Participants: in total 26 participants including 13 representatives from Estonian Veterinary and Food Board, 5 representatives from organizations and associations that deal with local food networks in rural areas and representatives of Estonian Ministry of Agriculture, Estonian Agricultural Registers and Information Board and Rural Economy Research Centre.

Visiting Andrea & Georg Blochberger’s dairy farm
Dairy farm where the ecological milk is being marketed directly and the milk is also used to make ice-cream which is sold in special market in Vienna
Höller Fleischerei und Schlachthof – small enterprise dealing with meat processing
Small enterprise dealing with meat processing – the enterprise involves slaughterhouse, meat processing devices and shop. The area’s farmers can bring their animals to the slaughterhouse – bovines, sheep, and pigs. The meat-industry produces 60 different products – most of them are marketed in their own shop.
Visiting Lindenhof farm

Suckler-cow breeding and calf-meat marketing. The farm production is being sold in different markets and fairs. Once a month a special farm-shop is opened – people can buy meat, half-finished products based on family receipts, ham, fat pork, sausages, local juice and alcohol.

Distelberger cider farm
The farm produces juice, cider and high quality fruit-wines out of apples and pears – all this is combined with local food. The pear-wine "Mostviertel Birnmost" received the EU quality mark  Protected Geographical Indication”.
  • Protected Geographical Indication, PGI – Similar mark to PDO - Protected Designation of Origin (see below), but the conditions are more opened. The producing and/or processing and/or preparing to market of product are held at the same geographical area. It is enough when one stage of producing is held at defined geographical area. The link of Protected Geographical Indication product with the geographical area can be based on specific characteristics or reputation. Visiting Mohnhof
Excursion at the poppy growing farm and museum, which is situated in the mountain-area up to 900 meters. Also tasting the local poppy products. The farm has been grown poppies for over 20 years.
The seeds of grey poppy "Waldviertler Graumohn" received the EU quality mark - PDO - Protected Designation of Origin). See the description above.
  • The Protected Designation of Origin marks the product, which is grown in a defined region, country, or in a place that has fixed characteristics due to human and environmental factors that are typical for the place. The condition is that the raw-material comes from the defined area and the production, processing and preparations are done in one geographical area. Haubiversum
(Haubi's Bäckerei & Konditorei)
Bakery where only local and biological raw-material is used. The company started in 1930 as a small family enterprise. Now it has developed into a big industry with 650 employees. The main products are frozen pastries for accommodation and catering enterprises which need short cooking time before serving.

Andrea and Franz Taschl’s dairy farm
A dairy farm situated up to 600 meters has a magical view. It grows dairy cattle and ecological milk is used to make cheese.

Meeting with representatives of Austrian Ministry of Health - Peter-Vitus Stangl (about veterinay) and Carolin Kreijci (overall questions about food safety and implementation of food regulations).
