ESTONIAN RURAL NETWORK: Study-trip to Malta about tourism and small-enterprises development

Time: 15.11.2011–18.11.2011

Place: Malta

Rural Network buraeu of Rural Economy Research Centre organized a study-trip "Tourism and small-entrepreneurship development with Leader programme in rural areas".

"Notice Leader"  www.maainfo.ee/leader/konkurss

The study-trip was organized in cooperation with Maltese rural network unit.

The aim of the study-trip was to introduce the well-organized rural tourism and small-entrepreneurship development to Estonian Leader project writers. Maltese and Estonian climate are quite different but we still have some common issues to share information about. Estonia and Malta are both really small countries so the common issues could be: usage of local resources, more efficient usage of heritage and traditions and more profitable marketing of enterprises. Malta joined the European Union in 2004 (at the same time as Estonia). More information about Malta europa.eu/about-eu/countries/member-countries/malta/index_et.htm

The participants of the study-trip visited Maltese rural network unit and projects related to rural tourism and local food and other projects related to rural development. Also all the three Leader action groups will be visited during the study-trip: GAL XLOKK Foundation http://www.galxlokk.com/, Gozo Action Group Foundation http://www.leadergozo.eu/ ja Majjistral Action Group Foundation http://www.leadermajjistral.eu/

Implementing Leader measure is quite new thing in Malta. The full implementation of Leader-measure started in Rural development plan period 2007-2013, likewise in Estonia. It is important to know that Maltese LAGs are also implementing the Leader international cooperation measure. More information about Maltese Leader and activities of Maltese Rural Network can be found on the web-site of European Network of Rural Development: http://enrd.ec.europa.eu/national-rural-networks/nrn-information/malta/en/malta_home_en.cfm
