Project title: Developing goat breeding in Andri-Peedo farm
MEASURE: Leader
Theme: agriculture
Keywords: goat breeding
Start year: 2011
Local action group: LAG Borderlands Leader
Name of the beneficiary: Ltd Andri-Peedo Farm
Sum of support: 11 855 euros
Backround of the project: Whereas the farm wanted to widen the goat breeding, they started processing and marketing goat milk. That in turn, brought up the need to purchase some modern technologies and renew some old machines.
Objectives of the project: Purchasing necessary devices for works around the farm and for maintaining meadows, grasslands and recreational and hiking trails, to establish a profitable and competitive producing farm.
Main activities: Purchasing tractor which can be used both inside the barn for transporting manure and hay, and for storing hay, and on meadows for transporting hay, swathing and raking. Thus there isn't enough land for producing enough feed, they are cooperating to manage and cut the grass from other meadows.

They also purchased necessary equipment for the tractor - a scoop (for maintaining goats' walking-ground and getting rid of snow), a crampoon (for transporting hay and manure) and tedder-swather for hay management.
Output and results indicators: Before purchasing the new devices they had to transport and store hay using only their hands. New scoop and crampoon allows to transport more hay, and that will lower the price a third. Also the hay packs will take less room on storing and transporting it.

They will also need to buy a new bigger barrow that has more capacity of weight. A new barrow would also decrease the time consumption and costs for fuel.

New devices help also to maintain the fields (for example cutting the meadow).

The added value is the maintainance of meadows and cattle range of Natura 2000 area to sustain the natural diversity.
Experiences/lessons learned: They will soon start to offer milk, cheese, cottage cheese, yoghurt and other products in bigger malls - currently they are purchased only on fairs or by direct-sale from farm. One of the innovative part of the project will be that they will start selling pedigree stock to boost Estonian and especially East-South Estonian goat breeding.
Additional information about the project: The project is a nominee in innovativeness category of RDP projects competition in 2012 "Notice the Innovative Agriculture".

The article about the success-story of the farm "How a goat eats dandelions?" was published in Estonian newspaper "Postimees".
