Project title: Tori horse breeding
MEASURE: 2.3.3
Measure name: Payments for keeping endagered species animals
Theme: agri-environment
Keywords: Endagered species; horse "Tori"; Agri-environment
Start year: 2008
Name of the beneficiary: LLC Tori Horse Hatchery
Homepage: http://www.torihobune.ee/English/aboutus.htm
Backround of the project: Tori which is situated near Pärnu, has became famous foremost because of the famous horsebreed "Tori". In year 1856 a horse hatchery was established in Tori. Tori is relatively young breed - acknowledged as a breed in 1925. The preparations for this started many decades earlier - but now it has became one of the endangered breeds.

Imre Sams - Manager of Tori Horse Hatchery, "In Estonia there are about 1400 "Tori" horses. We own 70 of them. "Tori" horse is one part of our cultural heritage."
Objectives of the project: The main course of Tori Horse Hatchery is breeding.
Imre Sams, "I would like to see "Tori" breed as a sustainable one with a great function. That doesn't mean it should be number one in jumping or in something else. It can be a calm tourism-horse cart-horse and so on, but there must be a certain function for it. It must take orders from humans, its nerves and personality must be in good order."
Main activities: At the moment there are 70 "Tori" horses in the hatchery.

Breeding expect planning for many years. First choosing right partners and then 11 months of gestation. The first evaluation is made when horse is 2 years old, trainings start at age 3. It may took many years to see results in physical efficiency for example in equestrian sport, wagon-riding or carriage-testing. Possible achievements can be derived at age six or seven.
Output and results indicators: 3-years old Tori Horse Hatchery mare Orsella, was certified as a best reserve-horse last year. This year best mare is two-years old Orhidee. - "These titles are very big acknowledgements for us. At least assessors think that our work has reached the right spot," says Imre.
Experiences/lessons learned: "I think the important aspect on raising horses is that there must be some-kind of idea how to use them," says Imre. Currently, horses are used mostly in sport, spending leisure time, tourism, hobby-riding and in hippo-therapy.

Imre Sams, "For me, retaining "Tori" horse is retention, continuance and promotion of rural development history and countryside culture. "Tori" horse is our unique asset."
