Project title: Animals herding in Lahkaja farm
MEASURE: 2.4
Measure name: Animals welfare: payments or herding animals
Theme: animals welfare
Start year: 2009
Name of the beneficiary: Lahkaja farm
Backround of the project: The number of cows who have an opportunity to use a cattle range has reduced in last decade. Although there are some farmers who still enable this to their animals.

"Usage of cattle ranges is extremely needful for animals," says Lahkaja farm host Vello Brett. He owns about 40 cows who spend the most of the snow-free period in the cattle range.
Objectives of the project: Animals pasture in cattle range with a view to animals welfare
Main activities: Repairing the railings that surround the cattle range, so that 40 bovines (including 21 dairy-cows) could be pastured in a cattle range from early spring to late autumn. The milk goes through the below-ground pipework to Luke Farmi dairy house, where milk will be processed into delicious bleu.
Output and results indicators: Exercising, fresh air and natural environment will strengthen the immune system and health, reduces diseases of cloven hooves and respiratory, predisposes procreation and development of mares. It also reduces the stress caused by lack of space. Animal breeding that would count on animals welfare and improving it can be predisposed by payments.
Experiences/lessons learned: "In addition to the pasture's good influence for the health, it is also comfortable and profitable," says Vello. "I don't have to clean the cow stable and feed in ensilage, what is necessary for animals kept inside the cow stable. Fuel is only used when making ensilage and my animals can eat nice fresh feed from the cattle range."
