Get inspired by a new publication showcasing a collection of innovative and community-based projects from rural Estonia. This compilation, produced by the METK CAP Network Unit in cooperation with LEADER Action Groups, highlights inspiring examples of successful initiatives.
Originally published in Estonian, Smart Villages and Communities has now been translated into English to share Estonia's strategies and inspire other countries in their community development efforts.
The smart village approach: empowering local communities
The smart village approach is a community-centered operation that considers the region's needs, specific characteristics, strengths, and opportunities. The focus is on community, cooperation, collective action, modern and digital solutions, and the sustainable use of local resources. Each community can be "smart" in its unique way, addressing the areas that need the most attention through the exchange of ideas among members.
How LEADER supports innovation
The smart village approach and LEADER share many commonalities. In Estonia, several activities promoting community involvement, cooperation, and sustainable development have been supported by the LEADER measure. These projects aim to facilitate the smart village strategy process, enable experience exchange, and foster networks through cooperation among various local action groups.
Exploring real-life examples
This publication presents 31 initiatives that support the smart village concept across Estonia, all funded through the LEADER measure of the Estonian Rural Development Plan 2014–2020. Each project is unique and inspiring, covering a wide range of topics, including youth engagement, culture, community development, mobility, local food production, environmental initiatives, remote work development, crisis management, tourism, and intergenerational connections. These examples represent just a fraction of the smart activities enhancing rural areas, improving living environments, and fostering cooperation among communities.
