Microplastics in Agricultural Soils – New Insights for Research, Advisory Services and Farming Practice
Mikroplastid jõuavad põllumajandusmuldadesse mitmel viisil, sealhulgas plastmultšide, komposti ja õhu kaudu, kuid eriti oluliseks allikaks on rehvide ja teekatte kulumise osakesed. Need osakesed püsivad mullas pikka aega ning võivad mõjutada mulla tervist, toitainete ringlust, elurikkust ja saagikust. Veebiseminar pakub värsket ülevaadet teadusuuringute tulemustest ja praktilistest võimalustest plasti sissevoolu vähendamiseks.

Eesmärk ja sihtrühm
Sisu ja peamised teemad:
Seminaril tutvustab Dominika Kundel (FiBL) kolme olulise uurimisprojekti värskeid tulemusi:
- MINAGRIS: uurib mikro- ja nanoplastide allikaid, levikut ja mõju ökosüsteemidele Euroopa põllumajandusmuldades ning pakub tööriistu plasti säästvamaks kasutamiseks.
- GRIP: arendab meetodeid maanteede äärsete põllumajandusmuldade rehviosakeste saaste kaardistamiseks ja mõõtmiseks.
- TRACK: keskendub sellele, kuidas rehvide kulumisosakesed mõjutavad aja jooksul mulla protsesse, lämmastikuringlust ja mikrobioloogiat.
Osalejad saavad ülevaate peamistest saasteallikatest, uusimatest teaduslikest tõenditest ja riskianalüüsi meetoditest. Samuti arutletakse praktiliste lahenduste üle, kuidas kaitsta mulla tervist ja vähendada plasti sattumist mulda.

Microplastics enter agricultural soils through a variety of pathways, including plastic mulches, composts, atmospheric deposition, and particularly tire and road wear particles. Once in the soil, these particles persist for long periods and may affect soil health, nutrient cycling, biodiversity and crop production. While important knowledge gaps remain, reducing plastic inputs to soils is increasingly recognized as a key element of sustainable soil management.
This event will present the latest findings from three FiBL research projects, all presented by Dominika Kundel, senior researcher in the Nutrient Management and Symbiosis group at FiBL whose work focuses on microbial ecology, soil health and data analysis.
The featured projects are:
- MINAGRIS – Micro- and Nano-Plastics in Agricultural Soils: Sources, Environmental Fate and Impacts on Ecosystem Services and Overall Sustainability, investigating the sources, environmental fate and impacts of micro- and nanoplastics in agricultural soils across Europe, as well as practical tools to support sustainable plastic use.
- GRIP – Geospatial Record and Interpolation of Tire Wear Pollution in Roadside Soils, developing innovative methods to map and quantify the spatial distribution of tire wear particles in roadside agricultural soils.
- TRACK – Tire Wear Particles as a Risk for Agroecosystem Functioning: Temporal Aspects, Nitrogen Cycling and Zinc Dynamics, examining how fresh and aged tire wear particles affect soil processes, nutrient cycling, plant growth and soil microbiology.
Participants will gain an overview of the main pathways through which microplastics enter agricultural soils, the latest scientific evidence on their effects, and current approaches to monitoring and risk assessment. The event will also discuss practical options for reducing plastic inputs and protecting soil health.
Advisors will receive science-based knowledge and practical messages to support farmers in their advisory work. Farmers will learn about relevant sources of microplastic contamination and opportunities to reduce plastic inputs on their farms. Researchers will benefit from an exchange on new methods, project results and remaining research challenges. The event will conclude with an interactive discussion on the implications of these findings for sustainable agriculture and future research.
